“Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely.” 1/22/07

24 hours from now I'll be getting ready to fly back to Vancouver, B.C. to finish the vocals on my album. The tracks have been coming along nicely in this past month or so and the light at the end of my DIY- indy-album tunnel is finally gleaming.

I've been listening so much to the songs that sometimes all I hear is a wall of sound...or, even better, sometimes I hear each and every nuance of each and every instrument, becoming temporarily incapable of hearing the collective noise known as "the song."

I was in my voice lesson on saturday when my voice teacher had me close my eyes and remember what it was I was singing about. Wow. I had been getting so caught up in creating this "perfect" end product - pitch, rhythm, arrangement, dynamics, tone, etc., etc....that I had forgotten the point of music: communication.

I wrote these songs because thoughts and feelings were speaking so loudly inside of myself that I birthed them, one by one, as songs. Songs that I hope will speak to others and communicate basic, raw, human feelings in the form of music.

I've been spending my alone time (which is mostly in the car driving) thinking about each one of those songs and where my headspace was when I wrote them. Wow. Have you ever re-read a journal after you've gotten some distance from the place you were in when you wrote it? It's like that...

This album is all about the journey into my 30's and all of the self discovery that jumped on board and shoved itself in my face. It's naked. It's real. It's raw. It's a self-doubting, coming-of-age, risk-taking quest for self actualization colored by societal and personal observations, infatuation, heartbreak, and finally....love.

I am so looking forward with sharing it with you all.....and in the meantime, continuing to share with you this process....

Cheers,
Jules
